Stylization

24 06 2008

So now I’ve decided that I’m going to stylize my characters to avoid stressing about falling into the uncanny valley.  I’ve run this decision by the program head and one of my teachers.  The program head thinks that if I’m going to stylize then I must have solid designs in 2 weeks or go back to my original ‘realistic’ approach.

I sketched designs between classes and now I have about a … hrm… I say, 80% solid model for the girl and a maybe 30% solid model for the soldier… I showed my production teacher my models and he gave me input and wanted me to look at Asterix characters and French animation for inspiration.

Now we’re doing scheduling.

Character model prototype

13 06 2008

Here it is! My ‘prototype’ with no z-brush with cloth normal mapping yet, as high poly as I needed it to be without any cloth folds etc.

the bust

the head

side with ear, I realized I didn’t have any good examples of my ear yet lol

I still think I would have done better making a female model considering I, myself, am female lol. I always found the female form easier to draw too which is what makes me think I’ll be better at modeling it hehe.

The program head said that for character modeling reels, we should also include nude or near-nude models of male and females so that the companies know we understand the human form for sure instead of just clothes on top. Also that some companies accept life-drawing 2D work as the ‘human figure studies’ but some require a 3D model.

I’ve decided to model the outside mansion/environment/thing as something based (sort of) on the Palais de Versaille but there are SO MANY figures on the outside so I’m going to change bits and pieces.

For my environment I think I’ll going to really start work with the bed because I have the best reference for that right now… also I think I’m going to do some proper 2D concept drawings.

EA Tour

5 06 2008

Whew! Taking a small break from doing some homework (lighting that haunted hallway now lol) and going to talk about the tour of EA sports I was on this early afternoon with the rest of the class.  So many of us (40 thereabouts) we were split into 2 groups and were taken around EA to see the facilities mostly heh.  There was a gym with weights and treadmills etc. a basketball court, they have a LOT of arcades! Old arcade games hehe and we got to see their old motion-capture building and also their soccer field and then we had a small presentation by one of the employees.

Seems that it’s not exactly animation they are looking for right now (good news for me!).  It’s modeling and, here’s the awesome bit, concept artists!!! That’s EXACTLY what I want to do!  Although I have yet to put any of my artwork up here … hm… I should get onto that, putting up some old 2D work and making some new ones too!

More 3D stuff!

5 06 2008

Yay! I haven’t updated in a while, well I’ve just got some assignments marked by my 3D modeling teacher. It’s coming up to end of term and I’m done career prep (the class which I had to start this blog) I’ve decided to keep it going so examples of my work can be up on the net to send to future employers lol.

Maybe my language has become considerably less formal too?

Anyways, here’s the 2nd head I made for class, it’s an old man, and also an ear I had to make and attach.

angle!

ear!
